The Fallen Leaf watershed is the natural system that collects, filters, and delivers the water residents rely on every day. Watersheds function like nesting dolls: a small drainage area flows into a creek, that creek feeds a lake, and that lake connects to an even larger system. For example, the watershed surrounding Susie Lake in Desolation Wilderness is part of the Fallen Leaf watershed, which connects to the broader Lake Tahoe basin. Our homes and the land around them are part of this system too, meaning everyday choices close to home influence the water we all share.
The Fallen Leaf Mutual Water Company draws drinking water directly from the lake, and even though it carefully filters the water it provides to our stockholders, the overall health of the watershed still matters. A watershed is more than geography — it’s a living network where soil filters water, plants stabilize slopes, and wildlife helps maintain balance. Fallen Leaf is fortunate to retain clear water, intact habitat, and natural beauty, and because everything is connected, even small actions can ripple outward to support water quality and ecosystem resilience.
Simple habits — staying on trails, preventing erosion, disposing of waste properly, minimizing pollutants around the lake and our homes, and respecting vegetation — protect the natural filtration system already at work. These steps don’t require perfection; they reflect an appreciation for how lucky we are to live in such a special environment. Mindful choices by residents and visitors help sustain healthy land, clean water, and a thriving watershed for generations to come.
